Driven to Succeed: VX7 Lamborghini Laptop

For motor heads, supercar manufacturer Lamborghini represents automotive nirvana – the marriage of premium build quality with a great big high performance engine and an over-the-top design complete with outrageous scissor doors. It is a marque that stirs emotions. And that trend continues with the co-branded ASUS-Automobili Lamborghini VX7 laptop.

The VX7 prides itself on speed and power; and its got the computing muscle to back it up, featuring the Intel® Core™ i7 processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX460M with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM. In terms of performance, this puts it up there with the right up there with ASUS’ line of ROG gaming laptops.

But there had to be a way to separate the men from the boys as both notebooks are targeted at entirely different audiences. The ASUS Design team was tasked to create something that appealed to the sophisticated set – professionals who were looking for a notebook that had style and performance.

“This was a dream project for any designer and car enthusiast. I was lucky to be fully in charge of the development of this very exclusive ASUS notebook, especially more so because it was my first notebook project,” said VX7 lead designer Skay Lin.

He gives us a lowdown on how difficult it was to work on this project:  “The complexity of the VX7’s design is something rarely found on notebooks. We also had to take into account the core values of the ASUS and Lamborghini brands.”

The VX7’s lines were originally that of a concept sketch for its predecessor, the VX5. This was in 2009, and it was deemed to be too extreme, its sharp creases mimicking that of the limited edition Lamborghini Reventon supercar which was produced that same year. In a way, you can probably say that the VX7 was ahead of its time.

That design has since been refined, and now incorporates elements from the last iteration of the Lamborghini Murcielago that has since been retired.

“All these exterior modifications are all directed at creating an aerodynamic design. That means having all the bulky components of the laptop be placed at the rear to give the front end its razor sharp look,” said Skay. The result – touches like the Y-shaped taillights and the layered engine cover have somehow found its way, in some form or other, into its computing namesake.

But ASUS didn’t just stop there; it had to put user ergonomics into consideration. The VX7 features a 10-key number pad keyboard, dedicated function buttons and a leather palm rest.  Skay is quick to point out that even the power button is crafted like a supercar’s engine start button.

Talk about an emotive computing experience…
