I’m looking for a very light-duty, lightweight Linux netbook, and the X101 looks like it might be it, as long as it has a command line and I can install gcc (unlike the emasculated HP MIE); I don’t mind paying half as much as I would for a System76 or ZaReason model, either.  Of course, I’d like more than 8GB; do we know if the (apparent) mini-PCIe storage will be user-replaceable along with the RAM?  Will the hard drive on the X101H be user-replaceable?  How much heavier will the X101H be than the X101?  Or are we still at the stage when all we know is “starting at 2 lb, $200, and 8GB” with no further details released?

Any information about the price of the several options (X101H with Meego)?

Well you can reformat it if you want – it’s just like any netbook – hit F2 as it boots and select to boot from a USB stick with your OS on it. It uses a standard mSATA SSD and there’s one DDR3 SO-DIMM slot in there. These are replaceable, but unfortunately opening it up requires removal of the whole bottom, which voids the warranty. The PM said there was no way to hit the price and ultra-slim design with a “door” to change them this time around.

The X101H is 22mm thick and because it has a hard drive it weighs more. The X101 is 920g so I would guess the H would nose just over 1kg. Both use N455 Atom CPUs.

If you look at the figure on page 1-5 of the user manual from the FCC submission (at https://apps.fcc.gov/eas/GetApplicationAttachment.html?id=1509195 ), item #4 is called out as a removable cover for access to the RAM.  Looking at the photos of the guts, I’m not savvy enough to see if the SSD would attach right near the RAM, but that door looks too big for just a single RAM module.  Are you sure you need to pull off the bottom to change these out?  Or is that true of the X101H and not the X101?

What I’d really like is to pull the hard drive out of an X101H and put in a spare 2.5″ SSD that I have because it turned out to be too small for the use for which I bought it, but I can’t bear to sell it on eBay and realize the loss from how far the price of new ones has come down since I bought it…  I’m cheap, but not necessarily “penny wise”!

I was specifically talking about the X101. I’ve not seen the X101H or discussed it with the design team. I would expect media and customer reviews to start arriving soon so it might be worth asking them, but I will also email the designers and ask WRG to the H model, but because they have this launch on atm I dunno how soon I’ll get a reply..

Well Ultrabook UX21 will come in October or September and its availability is also a still a question so I think now Eee X101 or H is a nice option for me when I want to buy a netbook because first of all its price is reasonable which also give me the freedom to buy a ultrabook when its available,second its small,*slim,*lightweight,*stylish,third is a New OS MeeGo.

Is X101H have option of SSD instead this HDD?

It’s only a basic 3 cell battery to keep the costs down. The hardware is not strong but it’s still the same Atom technology as in other netbooks. It’s not been changed to ARM for example.

You won’t be able to install Win7 on an 8GB SSD – XP yes, as long as you prepare the USB stick correctly. You can upgrade both the mSATA SSD and DDR3 SO-DIMM memory but it requires removing the whole underside plastic cover, which voids the warranty. This was unavoidable according to the PM due to keeping the construction strong enough within the cost and thickness limitation. The X101H is apparently more freely upgradable because it’s slightly thicker, but I haven’t seen it yet to check.

X101 is 920g, max thickness is 17mm iirc.

Right now, H = Hard drive. You can swap it for a 2.5″ SSD at your own cost though, but I’ve not seen the H model to know if it’s easy to do.

Okay its not possible to install Window 7 in UX101 so MeeGo is there only option.Will MeeGo supports all software and firmware(specially third party internet USB dongles) which Win 7 supports?
Okay Upgrade of storage and memory is nearly not possible my self but there must will be a official upgraded version is available with different label.
If its thickness will increase during upgrades then its not remains UX101.There only thickness is a reason that I’ll buy it.

Think of MeeGo as similar to Android – a simplified operating system based on Linux.  Depending on what methods are (readily) available to install software, you should be able to find applications that will read and write documents (OpenOffice.org), manipulate images (the Gimp), etc.; but you will not be able to take your copy of Microsoft Office or Adobe Photoshop or “all software which Win 7 supports” and install it under MeeGo, and you may find that the available MeeGo software either has more limited capability than, or produces files that are not completely compatible with, your Windows software.

As for hardware, Linux support for third-party hardware can be very painful to deal with. You can count on the seller of a MeeGo computer to support the built-in hardware, and hardware with a standard firmware or driver structure (RAM, hard drives, USB storage drives, many printers) should be supported by the underlying Linux.  However, hardware that needs a custom driver — and I’d guess “Internet USB dongles” will fall in this category — is going to take some fairly serious hacking to get it working under Linux, if it’s even possible.  Not only will you have to install the driver manually, but you’ll have to figure out what “fourth-party” driver to use in the first place and where to get it — the device’s manufacturer is unlikely to be of any help, unless it’s working with the computer manufacturer from the outset.

In general, a MeeGo device is likely to serve best when left pretty much stock, perhaps with some simple apps added (I understand Asus is going to make an app store of some kind available) but with the hardware mostly unchanged.  Of course, if you read my other comments, I’m planning on doing some development work with gcc and other tools; but I’m prepared for a certain amount of pain and suffering in the process.

when is the brown x101 going to available to purchase somewhere???? been waiting months and see the damn white and black but still no brown x101… im very dissapointed as i already have the Asus Eee pad transformer with dock (brown) and a K-53 series Asus 15.6″ laptop (in the brown suit finish) so naturally to complete my setup i need the x101 in brown to match my other two beautifully brown laptop devices (even my phone the HTC inspire is brown ) please someone give a status update on the mia brown x101, has it been cancelled? i see the new zenbook now which looks identical to the x101 in form but the finish is nothing like what i already have… with the aluminum look.. i see the zenbook has a mini hdmi port added too… that should be on the x101 aswell… ETA plz someone

It’s entirely depending on regional availability and local stores to decide what to stock I’m afraid. Black and white are just more popular.

i understand that, but i would be willing to order from anywhere in the world. do u know if its been cancelled or are u saying some chain like best buy needs to put in an order with asus for brown stock for it to be available ie: amazon only ordered black and white to resell? not a single website sells brown. i have the feeling it will not be showing its face now that the zenbook appeared… sux

You dont need to remove the whole panel. The msata drive and ram can be changed by removing the bottom cover which is being help by just one screw.
