3D or not 3D?

I just caught Avatar in 3D the other day. James Cameron’s live action epic adventure made me sit up and realize that 3D technology has gone beyond the pixels of Pixar Studios, and will inevitably make its way from the big screen to our living rooms.

No 3DTV? No problem.

3D TVs were the flavour of the week at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Granted, we still have to wear the uncomfortable shutter glasses and we’re at least a decade away from the holographic TVs seen in Total Recall, but it’s a start. Suddenly everyone is preaching the same sermon – it’s an exciting time to be a couch potato. But is 3D TV really the buzz word for 2010?

ESPN’s vice president for technology Chuck Pagano seems to think so, having revealed that the network is preparing for a “3D tsunami” in the TV industry and that it will be launching a 3D sports channel that broadcasts live events.

The prospect of the World Cup in 3D certainly whets my appetite. Imagine this: Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo shapes up to take his trademark free kick. He runs up, shoots, and the ball rockets into goal, bulging the net mere inches from your face.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. It will take a while before 3D TV takes off. It isn’t a question of “if”, but “when” will Lt. Horatio Caine gather evidence or Jack Bauer fire a gun in our living rooms?

For those looking to enter a 3D world right now, your best bet would be the virtual world. If the 3D home entertainment revolution is going to take place, then I’d say this is where it is likely to start.

ASUS have anticipated this and moved ahead of the curve. The Taiwanese tech giant recently introduced the world’s first 3D gaming laptop – the ASUS G51J-3D. 3D-ready Full HD, 120Hz PC monitors are also in the works. (Available @ Scan.co.uk)

In terms of content, it won’t be an issue as long as they’re compatible with NVIDIA’s GeForce 3D Vision glasses, which itself is backwards compatible with over a hundred PC games.

In the meantime, we’ll get our 3D-fix by fighting crime and zombies with Batman and Resident Evil’s Chris Redfield.

I won’t consider it a 3D TV revolution until my Friends Jennifer Aniston, Matt Le Blanc et al come hanging out in my living room.  So I guess we’ll just have to stay tuned.

When the 3D mode isn’t enabled, the laptop’s 120Hz display shows images as normal. When the 3D mode is enabled, that 120Hz image is split into two 60Hz stereoscopic images, and a pair of polarising glasses — not the active-shutter or red-and-green
