We’ve recently got word that ASUS’ ESC4000 server has been used by Taiwan’s National Center for High Performance Computing, or NCHC, as part of a huge supercomputer configuration. This cluster will be added to the TOP500 and Green500 supercomputer listings. The NCHC machine is expected to be added to the lists by the end of this year.
This is quite the accomplishment for what is essentially a mass-produced mainline 2U server such as the ESC4000. Typically, research organizations turn to more expensive and less efficient custom platforms, but the NCHC chose the ESC4000 for its combination of value and power.
The NCHC plans on putting the new supercomputer cluster to use in scientific modeling that should be of use to a variety of industries. The NCHC offers its resources to companies, universities and other organisations, assisting them in developing new technology and science.
The ESC4000 supports dual Intel Xeon 5600 series CPUs and up to four NVIDA Tesla graphics cards. It uses a massive 144GB of memory, and a 1600W power supply, all in a compact 2U form factor.
These traits have made the ESC4000 one of ASUS’ better-recognised servers. It was also recently chosen by France’s Supersonic Imagine, a leader in medical imaging and scanning technologies, as one of their staple server products. Supersonic Imagine have contributed many developments to modern medicine, including Aixplorer and Ultrafast Doppler technologies, helping diagnose a variety of conditions and thus save lives.
So yes, this is a feel good story, and one more example of technology being put to great use!
