Google’s 2-step verification process to protect your Google accounts is now available in over 150 countries. This feature was introduced earlier this year, and once activated, will require both your password and mobile phone for account login. Each time, a randomly generated code is sent to your mobile phone which acts as a second password. Even though hackers can use viruses and phishing schemes to steal your account password, it is much harder for them to obtain your physical phone. If you have a smartphone, the easiest way is to download the app (available on iPhone, Android, and Blackberry). Alternatively, you can opt to receive the code via a call or SMS.
It’s great to see Google making the 2-step verification process widely available. As our lives become more integrated with the cloud, protection of our virtual presence becomes increasingly important. From photos to documents to passwords, I store everything imaginable on my Google account. Having someone break into it would be just as disruptive as a physical break-in.
The only disadvantage is the extra inconvenience of entering two passwords instead of one. Fortunately, Google allows you to save the generated access code on your frequently used computer for up to 30 days.
Will you use this feature? You can activate it here.
