ASUS Eee Pad EP102 First Look

Following on from our previous Eee Pad EP101 ‘Transformer’ and Eee Slate EP121 articles, we’ve now come to the final new ASUS tablet: the Eee PAd EP102 ‘Slider’.

On the spec sheet it’s the same as the EP101 for the large part: there’s the dual-core Nvidia Tegra 2 ARM processor inside and Android ‘Gingerbread’ OS  powering the core of the machine.

As shown in the picture below, we can use the mini-HDMI output to plug into a larger display, as well as another – as yet unidentified (dock?) – socket next to it.

As you can see, the tablet slides upwards to reveal the keyboard underneath. This gives us the choice of whether to use just the touchscreen or type with full QWERTY action. Obviously the keyboard is smaller than the EP101, but we’d imagine it’s far quicker to use and more convenient as it’s always there. Overall its great to see ASUS giving us a choice between flip-up keyboard and detachable one.

Despite its modest 10.1 inch proportions, the display resolution is pushed to a higher, HD-capable 1,280 x 800 to give us more screen real-estate to work with.

ASUS clearly has its eye acutely on the chic, minimalist look with its large, glass display and small silver bezel that also wraps around the edges. That touchscreen is capacitive, as you’d expect, and appears to sport just the one button (for home?) neatly cut into the right hand side.

There’s also at least one USB 3 port and both front and back webcams for photos and video conferencing, but that’s as much info as we have right now – check back soon once we get more details.

So, which is it then – the Eee Slate EP121 for serious business, or, fun and novel Eee Pads EP101 or 102? Or are you just after a nifty plain tablet? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
